The war on leaks project by Ugu District Municipality has been hailed for providing relief for unemployed young people in the region.

This comes after Ugu recently launched the war on leaks project at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre.

According to Ugu, the municipality received over 5 000 applications for the project.

While there is an ongoing online discourse about how the successful applicants were selected, Ugu mayor, Sikhumbuzo Mqadi said the initiative formed part of the municipality’s intensified drive to reduce water losses, protect critical water infrastructure and create meaningful opportunities for local communities.

Mqadi said the project demonstrated the municipality’s determination to turn challenges into action.

“The war on leaks is about protecting every drop of water while creating opportunities for our people. Today we are putting boots on the ground and strengthening our fight against water losses across the district,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ugu municipal manager, Vela Mazibuko, said the programme would strengthen the municipality’s operational response and contribute towards improved service delivery.

He said the project was about action, accountability and results.

Mazibuko added that by strengthening their capacity on the ground.

“We are taking another important step towards reducing water losses and building a more efficient and sustainable water services system,” he said.
