The persistent rain failed to stop pensioners from competing at the 2026 KZN Provincial Golden Games at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban last week.
Senior citizens from Ugu District Municipality went head-to-head with pensioners from other districts, bringing skill, dance and determination to the track and field.
The energy was electric. From the songs on the sidelines to the goals on the pitch, senior citizens showed that age is just a number.
The games played included duck walk, dress-up, ring the stick, rugby ball throw, ball pass and kick, ball relay, passing the ball, and goal shooting.
The best players of the day were selected to form one unstoppable Team KZN to fly the KZN flag high at the National Golden Games.
KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC, Mbali Shinga, said the people who participated in the games were aged 60 years and above.
“The event is a celebration of not just sports, but also a powerful reminder that age is just a number when it comes to passion and physical prowess,” said Shinga, before she thanked everyone who participated in the games despite the weather conditions.
