The Marburg Residents Rate Payers Association (MRRPA) said it has tried to find solutions in the issue of cattle roaming around Marburg.

This comes after the South Coast Weekly published concerns from residents about the cows, saying that they are a safety hazard.

In a statement Fathima Moosa of the MRRPA said residents of Lionsgrove have repeatedly complained about cows wandering around and causing damage to their properties.

Recently, said Moosa, a resident from Wimpy Homes contacted her regarding cows found next to her property.

She explained that Marburg Residents Rate Payers Association approached the owner of the cows, who maintained that he was permitted to herd his cattle in the area.

“Law Enforcement was called to the scene, and the owner was informed about the applicable municipal by-laws. A meeting was subsequently scheduled at the Betania Tribunal Court,” she said.

She added that the meeting was attended by representatives from the SPCA, law enforcement, traditional authority, Marburg Residents Rate Payers Association, and the owners of the cows.

“Law enforcement explained the relevant by-laws regarding the keeping and herding of cattle in residential areas, including Marburg and Merlewood. The owners were also given an opportunity to explain their concerns and present their side of the matter,” she said.

Moosa said the conclusion was that applicable by-laws must be adhered to.

“Should there be further non-compliance, fines may be issued and the cattle may be impounded in accordance with the applicable regulations,” she said.
